CYCLE, RETRACE, PROGRESS, BE STILL
Solo Marimba, Vibraphone or Piano
[2 minutes] Difficulty: III
Originally written for piano with dancer, this fugue can also be performed on vibraphone (with a few minor transpositions); stick dampening along with pedal dampening adds a further technical dimension towards a musical end; with a concert context this could be a nice cameo transition piece after an intense or extended work. Premiered by Michael Udow, piano; Nancy Udow, dancer/choreographer.

IN MEMORIAM, ALAN ABEL
Piano (or Marimba)
[2 minutes] Difficulty: III
The COVID-19 global pandemic of 2019-2020 has taken the life of a consummate artist and mentor of percussionists from around the world. Alan Abel was first and foremost a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a great-great grandfather to a caring and loving family. His musical contributions as Associate Principal Percussionist for the Philadelphia Orchestra, and faculty member initially at the Settlement School and later at Temple University, are immeasurable. His sense of rhythm was impeccable, and his color pallet of sounds and nuanced phrasing were innately extraordinary, which matches the elegant sonority of the Philadelphia strings. The ripple effect of Alan Abel’s passing on April 25, 2020 has echoed around the world.
